The Quarr, as its name implies, was once a quarry where the distinctive ‘inferior oolite’ limestone was once mined. Many local buildings, including parts of the Abbey, are built from this material.
All that remains of the quarry today is the exposed Jurassic cliff-face where many small fossils can be seen:
The rest of the old quarry is now a designated local nature reserve, owned by Sherborne Town Council and maintained largely by volunteers.
The site is popular with locals and dog-walkers, as well as many species of indigenous wild-life:
The Quarr is a real credit to all those who have invested so much time and effort into making this into a haven for wildlife. To all of them – thanks a ton!
